In a recent study, researchers from Yale University found that grapefruit extract was found to be more effective than placebo in preventing the onset of anxiety and depression in a group of patients with a genetic disorder that causes a type of mitochondrial disease.
The researchers theorized that grapefruits’ ability to suppress anxiety and reduce depression may have a genetic component, but they couldn’t definitively say that.
But now, a team of researchers from the University of Pittsburgh have found that the fruit also works as a treatment for depression.
The research team, led by Dr. Paul G. Rizzo and Dr. Jennifer Rizzos, analyzed the results of a study that tested grapefruit extracts against a placebo in people with depression and anxiety.
“The findings suggest that the grapefruit plant is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorders, and that grape-derived extracts may be useful in the treatment of patients suffering from these conditions,” the researchers wrote in the study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology.
In their paper, the researchers note that grape extracts are also used to treat cancer patients.
“We are excited to report that grape fruit extract is effective in alleviating symptoms of anxiety, mood, and physical and psychological distress associated with cancer, particularly for patients with pre-existing cancer and those with advanced metastatic disease,” the authors wrote.
“Although the clinical effects of grapefruit are not known, this finding suggests that it is possible to enhance clinical efficacy by reducing anxiety and mood.”
The researchers believe that grapevine extracts could be useful as a therapeutic agent in the management of depression, anxiety, and anxiety disorders.
“Grapefruit is an attractive alternative in a number of fields,” Dr. Razzos said in a statement.
“Its natural composition, high levels of antioxidants, and high concentrations of vitamin C have been shown to reduce stress and promote mood in cancer patients.”
Grapefruits are one of the best sources of antioxidants in the world.
Grapes contain a variety of compounds that can improve your immune system, prevent and treat inflammation, boost brain and immune function, and aid in the absorption of nutrients.
